History of Casino
The history of casino starts in the early 17th century. The term casino is an Italian word coined to refer to a small house usually built on an Italian villa.
Casino originally was not known as a gambling place. Gambling became associated with ‘casino’ only in the 19th century, wherein now the term refers to public buildings where lesiure activities are conducted particularly gambling and sports.
In America, the early American casinos were thought of as saloons. The importance of saloons were influenced brought about by New Orleans, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco.
Saloons served as a place for travelers to meet and mingle with others and oftentimes this involved gambling. In the early 20th century America, gambling was deemed illegal and was banned.
How Gambling Started
The exact date that gambling started is quite difficult to trace. However, the first recorded Chinese gambling practice was in 2300 BC. But gambling activity has been known to exist in almost all society in the olden times.
Ancient Greeks and Romans to France during the time of Napoleon and Elizabethan England, history is filled with stories of gambling. At the peak of Roman Empire, lawmakers even required that all children be taught to gamble. One Roman emperor even had his carriage custom-designed so he can play dice games while on his way to work.
The French invented the playing cards in 1387, and in 1440 Johann Gutenberg from Germany created the first full deck of cards. The first casino was purported to be built in Venice around 1638.
In 1931, the state of Nevada and Las Vegas legalized gambling. This heralded the start of the first casinos in America. Other regions in America involved with gambling are Tunica Resorts, Mississippi and in the Gulf Coast region around Biloxi.
Current gambling games are based on the old games. For instance, sixteenth century French working class played the Egyptian game of roulette. Napoleon also played vingt-et-un or the current blackjack game.
The game of craps is derived from the English’s game called hazard. Recent-day poker games are based on the games of chance in Persia, Italy and England. Betting techniques in poker and the bluffing ideas were introduced by the French and British respectively.
